The Afternoon Pause

Paul watched the water lap at the pool’s edge, Kevin’s sweat-slicked shoulders rising and falling in time with his own breath. The heat pressed down, but it was the silence that felt like a deadline. He wanted to say something before this afternoon slid back into its usual routine of towels and polite distance.

He cleared his throat. "Stay longer," he said finally. "I’m not done talking." Kevin didn’t answer right away; instead, he shifted closer, letting one hand rest on Paul’s shoulder as if that simple touch had always been the reply.

The space between them tightened into something warmer. The sun kept burning, the water kept lapping, and for once neither of them felt the need to rush it.
