Between the Booth Lights

The convention hall hummed around them—booth lights, distant announcements, a thousand conversations—but David and Stephen had carved out a small quiet in the corner. Between them they held their shields like shared props; one plain dark, the other red with a star that caught the overhead glare.

David leaned his shoulder against his gauntlet and looked at Stephen instead of the crowd. He’d rather stay here than go home alone to an empty apartment, but he didn’t want it to sound selfish or like he was dragging someone into boredom. He let the metal cool between them: Same time tomorrow? We can pretend we’re guarding the exhibit again.

Stephen smiled and tapped his gauntlet twice against David’s—light, deliberate, a promise in rhythm. Only if you promise not to let the armor get in the way of talking. The distance between them folded into something warm and chosen; when they stepped away from the noise, their conversation was already back on.
