The Lantern’s Still On

Andrew kept his voice light, as if he’d been asked to read a menu and not invite someone in. The porch air had cooled enough that the lantern above them felt like an excuse rather than decoration. He let his hand hover near Nicholas’s arm without touching, watching the other man’s smile for any sign of discomfort.

“The lantern’s still on,” Andrew said. “You don’t have to move yet.”

Nicholas didn’t answer right away. Instead he loosened his grip on his jeans and stepped closer until their shoulders nearly brushed. The quiet ease that followed made Andrew feel less like he was asking for time, more like they’d already found it. He let out the breath he hadn’t realized he was holding; Nicholas smiled back without words. Somewhere behind them, the porch light hummed on as if to confirm that tonight wasn’t done.
